Sandwich Tern Nesting Habitat Loch Ryan

Plans are being explored to create a new nesting habitat to encourage Sandwich terns to once again breed on the shore of Loch Ryan.

The exciting project is being proposed by Equinor, a leading developer of offshore wind power in the UK and worldwide. The project would involve the creation of a natural water-fed pool – at least one hectare in size – with a series of mini-islands at a location near Kirkcolm. The end result would be a safe and secure nesting habitat that should prove attractive to the birds which, until about 15 years ago, used to nest on Loch Ryan at Scar Point. The project will be subject to a full planning application to Dumfries and Galloway Council.
